Vamp protection relays and arc protection systems will protect the Yeongwol power plant extension of Korea Southern Power Company (KOSPO). The order is the biggest single contract for Vamp in Korea so far and will further strengthen Vamp’s position on the Korean power generation market. By today only four companies are certified to execute such projects for the five Korean Power Generation Companies, including Kospo as one of them.
The project is a total delivery by Vamp Korea and comprises 80 Vamp 257 protection relays equipped with the IEC 61850 communication protocol, furthermore the VAMP257 is also used as 154 kV controller. The delivery also include 12 units of VAMP465 3-winding transformer protection. All relays are connected to SCADA system .
The plant is also protected with full arc protection with four arc protection central units for the medium-voltage section and 12 units for the low-voltage section of the plant. As the first project in Korea it also includes new innovative VAM 3ED arc eliminators for the medium-voltage arc protection systems allowing less than 5 ms total arc flash elimination time as well as VAMP3QD eliminators for the low voltage side.
The Yeongwol plant is a 930 MW combined steam and gas turbine power plant located in Gang Won province, in the northeastern part of Korea. The extension is presently under construction and will be completed in June 2010. The owner of the power plant, KOSPO, is a subsidiary of the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), which administers the Korean national power grid and the country’s five major power generation companies.
